Why Are Architects So Hard to Get Hold Of? The Mystery of the Disappearing Architect

Four emails, three weeks, several phone calls and one mysterious button 2. Welcome to the surprisingly entertaining world of trying to reach a busy architect.

Overwhelmed architect resting on construction drawings beside a laptop and hard hat, illustrating why busy architects struggle to respond to emails and enquiries.

It All Starts With an Enquiry...

It's Monday morning, coffee is ready, emails are open, and suddenly something exciting appears in the inbox. A new enquiry from an architecture firm! They're interested in architectural outsourcing services. Perhaps they need additional Revit drafting support, help with construction documentation or an extra pair of hands to get a project over the finish line.

Wonderful! At Lynx Professional Services, we love hearing from architecture firms looking for support. We respond, introduce ourselves and suggest a convenient time for a quick conversation. And then... silence. Not a polite "We'll get back to you next week." Not even an automated out of office reply, just silence. Perhaps the architect has gone into witness protection, or perhaps they're simply being an architect.

Week One: We're Feeling Optimistic

  • Email number 1: "Thank you for your enquiry. We'd love to learn more about your project and see how Lynx can assist. When would be a convenient time to connect?" No response. That's fine, architects are busy people. Between client meetings, design changes, drawing reviews and contractors asking questions that were answered on Sheet A-103, we understand. A few days later...

  • Email number 2: "Just following up to see whether you had a chance to review my email. Happy to arrange a quick call whenever convenient." Still nothing. Perhaps they're on site, perhaps they're meeting a client or perhaps Revit has decided that today would be a wonderful day to stop cooperating. We're not worried, yet.

Week Two: Let's Try the Telephone

Surely a quick phone call will solve everything. We dial the office and a friendly automated voice answers: "Thank you for calling. Please press 2 to speak to the architect." Excellent! Press 2. Click. The call disconnects, strange. Let's try again.

"Please press 2 to speak to the architect." Press 2. Click. Disconnected again, Now we're curious. Is button 2 broken? Has the architect disconnected the entire department? Is this a clever new system designed to protect architects from unnecessary conversations? We try once more, same result.

At this point, we're beginning to believe that pressing 2 doesn't connect you to an architect. It connects you directly to another dimension. Somewhere out there is a collection of unanswered phone calls, missing emails and architectural drawings waiting for approval.

Week Three: The Mystery Deepens

Three weeks have passed, we're now on email number 4. Several telephone attempts have been unsuccessful, and we're beginning to recognise the automated receptionist's voice. We consider sending a carrier pigeon. But then we remember that architects probably require a permit for the pigeon to land. Perhaps we should issue an RFI instead.

- RFI-001: Confirmation of Architect's Current Whereabouts.

- Question: Please confirm whether the architect remains available for discussion regarding the original outsourcing enquiry.

- Response required: At your earliest convenience.

We suspect even that RFI might remain unanswered. And here's the funny part, the architect contacted us first! If you're an architect reading this and quietly giggling because this sounds suspiciously familiar, we promise we're laughing with you.

But Why Are Architects So Hard to Get Hold Of?

There is actually a very understandable explanation. Architecture is not exactly a profession where you can close your laptop at 5 p.m. and assume everything will wait until tomorrow. A typical day might involve:

  • A client requesting one more design change.

  • A contractor needing clarification on a detail.

  • A Revit model refusing to cooperate.

  • A construction documentation deadline approaching.

  • A project manager asking when the drawings will be ready.

  • A meeting that was supposed to take 15 minutes turning into two hours.

And somewhere in that busy schedule is an email from Lynx asking when you might have time for a quick conversation. Suddenly, it's Friday. Then it's Monday again, then three weeks have passed. We understand how it happens.

Perhaps Being Too Busy to Reply Is Exactly Why You Contacted Us

Here's where the story becomes interesting. If an architecture firm is struggling to find time for a short conversation about additional production support, perhaps the workload is already putting pressure on the team. And that's exactly why architectural outsourcing can be so useful. Architecture firms don't necessarily need more permanent employees every time project workloads increase.

Sometimes they simply need experienced professionals who can step in, understand their standards and help keep production moving. At Lynx Professional Services, we provide remote architectural production support to architecture and interior design firms across the USA and Canada. With over 15 years of architectural industry experience, we understand the demands of architectural projects, from early design development through construction documentation.

How Lynx Can Help Busy Architecture Firms

Our services include:

  • Architectural drafting: Floor plans, elevations, sections, details and drawing updates.

  • Revit outsourcing: Architectural modeling, documentation and production support.

  • AutoCAD drafting: 2D drawings, redlines, as-builts and documentation.

  • Design development: Developing architectural drawings as the project progresses.

  • Construction documentation: Supporting drawing packages and permit submissions.

  • BIM services: Building information modeling and model-based documentation.

  • 3D visualization: SketchUp modeling, renderings and presentation support.

We work with your existing team, following your drawing standards, templates and project requirements. Your architects remain responsible for design decisions, client relationships and professional approvals. Lynx helps with the production work that takes up valuable time. And perhaps, just perhaps, we can help free up enough time for you to answer that fourth email.

Dear Architects, We Know How Busy Life Gets!

We know that in the world of architecture, priorities can change overnight. One minute you're looking for additional support, and the next you're juggling client meetings, drawing revisions and deadlines that somehow keep getting closer. So if you've reached out to us and then life gets in the way, we completely understand.

Whether your project has been delayed, your workload has changed or you're simply trying to get through the week, we're always happy to pick up the conversation whenever the timing is right. At Lynx, we know that sometimes the busiest architecture firms are the ones that could benefit most from an extra pair of hands. And as for that mysterious "Press 2 to speak to the architect" option... We're still convinced there's an architect on the other end somewhere! Perhaps one day we'll actually get through. Until then, we'll keep smiling.

How Architectural Outsourcing Makes Life Easier

Architectural outsourcing is not about replacing the people who know your projects best. It's about giving them additional production capacity when they need it. A firm might have an excellent design team but limited time to complete documentation for several projects simultaneously. Instead of placing every task on already busy architects, some production responsibilities can be assigned to an experienced external team.

For example, Lynx can help with Revit modeling and drawing updates while the in-house architect reviews design decisions and coordinates with the client. The same applies to AutoCAD drafting, design development and construction documentation. The objective is to support your existing workflow, not introduce another complicated process.

One Project or Ongoing Support?

Every architecture firm works differently. Some need help completing a particular drawing package. Others need a dedicated architectural production professional who becomes familiar with their standards over time. Lynx can support both arrangements. We also offer the opportunity to start with a small portion of a project at no charge, allowing a prospective client to assess our work and how we fit into their existing processes. No disappearing acts required.

Frequently Asked Questions About Architectural Outsourcing

The Final Word: We're Still Here!

To all the architects juggling deadlines, design changes, contractors and a never-ending inbox, we understand. It also raises the question: Why Are Architects So Hard to Get Hold Of? Often, the answer is simple. Your days don't always go according to plan, and sometimes the very reason you reached out for additional architectural support is the same reason you haven't had time to respond.

At Lynx Professional Services, we're happy to work around your schedule. Whether you're ready to discuss a project today, next week or when things settle down, we'd love to hear from you. And to the architect whose phone system keeps telling us to press 2. We haven't given up hope. But next time, we might try pressing 3.
